Christmas is a time to celebrate great British produce so it’s well worth looking a little closer to home for the perfect fizz to complement that beautiful Scottish smoked salmon.
Greyfriars Vineyard is a leading light in the recent English wine revolution. Since 2010 the Wagstaff family have been busy winning a mountain of accolades for the sparkling wines made from their own vineyards on the chalky slopes of the Surrey North Downs.
For special occasions, this boutique producer offers a trio of vintage sparkling wines: its zesty white Classic Cuvée 2013, the strawberry-scented Rosé Reserve 2013 and the lightly oaked Blanc de Blancs 2014. Each wine comes enclosed in an elegant gift box, making Greyfriars an ideal home-grown Christmas present.
Even more appealing for lovers of top quality traditional method sparkling wine is a price that compares so favourably with other big names. Take it from The Spectator magazine’s critic, who hailed Greyfriars as a “baby Krug” while declaring “I doubt any wine on the market offers as much pleasure per pound as this English champagne rival.”
Greyfriars is a range of sparkling and still boutique English wines of world class quality, made by Mike and Hilary Wagstaff and their family on the North Downs in Surrey. The vineyards span 50 acres over three sites with 75,000 vines. The facilities include a state-of-the-art winery, chalk underground cellar, shop and tasting facilities. The wines have won much acclaim and several major awards and medals at international wine competitions.
